Quarantine Blogs 4/20-4/24

4/20/20 Seeing as I cannot leave my house I find that I have been spending a lot more time outside in my backyard, sitting in the sun and listening to music. I feel like now more so than ever that my mood is more affected by the weather occurring outside my window, this week with all the rain I haven’t gotten outside as much which makes for a less pleasant day. The other day I was thinking about whether or not I would’ve rather had COVID-19 come during the winter when you stay mostly inside anyway and when you aren’t inclined to go outside really because it’s so cold out. I think if I had a choice I would’ve rather had COVID-19 hit in the winter time, but only if I could guarantee that we could return to school. But at the same time, not only being forced to stay in your house during the stay at home order but also not being able to escape outside during that time would be really tough. The Last Dance

America is often referred to as the “land of opportunity“, a place for an individual to find refuge and start anew with their lives, however, as reflected through Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby and Wolff’s The Rich Brother , America’s inhabitants’ obsession with wealth and image, America should be referred to as the land of “status“ rather than opportunity. Fitzgerald introduces Gatsby as an infamous man who throws lavish parties for many to enjoy, drives nice cars and lives in a mansion on the shore. Despite the many “little parties“, many of Gatsby’s guests are left guessing and assuming about Gatsby: “I don’t know… an Oxford man” (49). Seeing as Gatsby himself mingles with some of his guests, he has every opportunity to remedy these misconceptions and rumors being formed about his life. Between the World and Me (updated)

Coates’ Between the World and Me is a book written as a step towards equality. Coates spends 152 pages trying to draw attention to the way the world is for people of color as an effort to get the audience to acknowledge the injustice and inequality that occurs in today’s world. In doing so, on page 7 Coates says “race is the child of racism, not the father” meaning that race did not form naturally but was formed purposefully within our society to create status within our community. The white members of a society use race as a tool to assert ourselves to the top, to maximize our perceived status and by doing so we overlook the injustices that those of color face. A recurring theme in Coates’ Between the World and Me is fear; Coates is a black individual and explains how he is chronically worried about his body’s well being solely because of the construct of race in America.
