Quarantine Blogs 4/20-4/24

4/20/20 Seeing as I cannot leave my house I find that I have been spending a lot more time outside in my backyard, sitting in the sun and listening to music. I feel like now more so than ever that my mood is more affected by the weather occurring outside my window, this week with all the rain I haven’t gotten outside as much which makes for a less pleasant day. The other day I was thinking about whether or not I would’ve rather had COVID-19 come during the winter when you stay mostly inside anyway and when you aren’t inclined to go outside really because it’s so cold out. The Last Dance

America is often referred to as the “land of opportunity“, a place for an individual to find refuge and start anew with their lives, however, as reflected through Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby and Wolff’s The Rich Brother , America’s inhabitants’ obsession with wealth and image, America should be referred to as the land of “status“ rather than opportunity. Fitzgerald introduces Gatsby as an infamous man who throws lavish parties for many to enjoy, drives nice cars and lives in a mansion on the shore. Despite the many “little parties“, many of Gatsby’s guests are left guessing and assuming about Gatsby: “I don’t know… an Oxford man” (49). Seeing as Gatsby himself mingles with some of his guests, he has every opportunity to remedy these misconceptions and rumors being formed about his life. New Trier Recycling

Recently the number of grocery stores that no longer use plastic have been on the rise. With all the climate strikes that have gone on it is hard to deny the fact that global warming is an issue and we need to take action . Many of the students that go to New Trier attend climate strikes and support the change, but this raises the question of whether or not New Trier feel the same way; so where does New Trier stand on climate change? I was previously under the impression that New Trier doesn’t recycle, but I was proven wrong; according to New Trier News, we do in fact recycle. However, New Trier only recycles half a pound per student each week. This may seem like a lot but many of the recycling bin’s contents are often discarded because New Trier’s students (myself included) are under the impression that the school doesn’t recycle and are less conscientious of what they throw into what bin.
